There is a slight difference in configuration, but nothing that would cause a safety problem. As a roadie, I try to keep my head as low as possible and look "eyes up" to see as far down the road in front of me as I can. I buy glasses that have as much coverage above the eye to make that possible. MTB riders are more upright and this feature is not as important to them, IMO.
